Protect Macquarie Island

The Federal Government are expanding Macquarie Island Marine Park, after strong public support.

Thanks to everyone who made a submission!

The public consulation process showed two things:

  1. Thousands of Australians want strong protections for our precious ecosystems and unique wildlife

  2. When our voice is loud enough to make politicians listen, the Federal Government can take steps to protect Australia’s natural environment

Help take the wins beyond ‘Macca’. Australia’s national environmental laws are being rewritten as we speak, so we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to ensure the Government gets it right!

Why expanding the Macquarie Island Marine Park matters:

Macquarie Island, in the subantarctic, is renowned for its seabird populations - with millions of seabirds breeding on this remarkable island. This island is so important that for dozens of Australian subantarctic birds, including Royal Penguins (pictured), it ranks as a Key Biodiversity Area.

The existing Macquarie Island Marine Park represents only a small proportion of the foraging ranges for many Macquarie Island birds. Increasing the size of the Macquarie Island Marine Park would be invaluable for these birds, particularly during breeding seasons - helping populations recover from the impacts of terrestrial pests.
